The Atmosphere of Wangsimni restaurant, Baek So Jeong Wangsimni branch

Although the restaurant isn’t huge, it’s impeccably clean and organized, creating a pleasant and welcoming atmosphere. The staff greeted us with bright smiles and a warmth that reminded me of the exceptional hospitality you’d find in Taiwan or Japan. The space also offers high chairs for families with children, and the open kitchen setup is a bonus for those who like to see how their food is prepared.

The Menu

Ordering is simple with a tablet at each table. Baek So Jeong is best known for its variety of soba, including mazesoba (mixed noodles), as well as cold soba and tonkatsu (pork cutlets). My sibling and I decided to try the mazesoba + tonkatsu set (KRW 14,900) and the cold soba + tonkatsu set (KRW 14,500).

While waiting for the food, I was pleasantly surprised by how delicious the water tasted – a rich barley tea that had a much deeper flavor than what I’m used to at home.

The food arrived beautifully presented on individual trays. Each tray had neatly arranged dishes that made it easy to enjoy, whether you’re dining alone or sharing with others.

My cold soba looked particularly appealing, with fresh vegetables like cucumber, carrots, red cabbage, and crispy fried tofu piled generously on top of the noodles. The dish was not only visually stunning but also incredibly generous in portion size.

The tonkatsu was thick, crispy on the outside, and tender on the inside – just how I like it. If you prefer a lighter, non-greasy tonkatsu, this is the place for you. I could imagine it pairing well with truffle salt or wasabi salt instead of the usual tonkatsu sauce.

The mazesoba my sibling ordered was equally impressive. Packed with over 60 ingredients, it was rich and flavorful. If you’re unfamiliar with how to eat mazesoba, don’t worry – the restaurant provides a helpful guide on how to mix the noodles and enjoy them at their best. A splash of kombu vinegar enhanced the dish even further, adding a depth of umami. Next time, I’m going to try the spicy version!

If you have room left after finishing the noodles, you can ask the staff for a bowl of rice to mix with the remaining sauce – a perfect way to enjoy every last bit of flavor.

We ended the meal with a chewy dessert that looked intriguing from the moment it arrived. It was a mochi-like treat drizzled with what seemed to be honey or condensed milk – the ideal finishing touch to a satisfying meal.

Final Thoughts

With constant dinging sounds signaling the flood of delivery orders, it’s clear that Baek So Jeong Wangsimni is also a popular choice for takeout. Whether you’re dining in or ordering at home, this is definitely a hidden gem in Wangsimni that I’ll be revisiting soon!
