Atmosphere of Sodongcheon

Sodongcheon

The interior of Sodongcheon is warm and inviting, with a main dining hall and a sizable private room. On most visits, I find myself seated by the window or in the center of the hall, but this time I had the pleasure of dining in their private room.

What I love most about Sodongcheon, aside from the excellent food and perfectly-sized space, is the attention to detail. The owner is incredibly friendly and attentive, ensuring that each table is well taken care of. But what truly sets this place apart are the thoughtful and inspirational messages scattered throughout the restaurant, even on the disposable table mats.

Some of the heartfelt messages you might notice include:

Sodongcheon

  • “I see, come here, let me hold you.”
  • “Love and be happy in every moment.”
  • “Don’t worry. Soon you’ll bloom like a beautiful flower.”

These messages, carefully selected to complement the restaurant’s “emotional Chinese dining” concept, often provide more comfort and encouragement than one might expect. It’s a small but meaningful touch that adds to the overall dining experience.

Typically, when I dine out, I find myself adding extra vinegar to the pickled radish, but the danmuji here is perfectly balanced just the way it is.

True to the efficiency of a Chinese restaurant, the dishes arrive quickly. First, the Stir-fried Chili Pork Rice was served, followed by the Steamed Dumplings, and finally, the Seafood Jjamppong. The timing was impeccable, with everything arriving within minutes of each other.

Stir-fried Chili Pork Rice
This dish features a delightful mix of bell peppers, pork, onions, and mushrooms, all expertly stir-fried with a hint of smoky flavor. The vegetables retain their crunch, and the sauce, though mildly spicy, is just right.

The dumplings are perfectly steamed, with a moist and tender texture. Dipping them in a bit of soy sauce adds just the right amount of flavor, making each bite delicious.

Sodongcheon’s name means “Looking at the World Through a Small Hole,” reflecting the owner’s desire to offer a little bit of happiness through each meal. If you’re in the mood for a delightful Chinese dining experience in Shindang-dong, Sodongcheon is the place to go!
