Recently, while visiting a Konkuk University Cafe with my boy friend, I ordered him an Einspänner for the first time. After taking a sip, he immediately said, “This tastes exactly like Vienna coffee.” That one sentence unexpectedly sent me down a rabbit hole researching the origins of Einspänner and Vienna coffee. Before visiting, I expected a modest dessert café, but the actual space is enormous, with spacious seating layouts that make it comfortable to relax for long periods.
Most tables are arranged for four people, and the seating is intentionally spaced out, creating a calm and comfortable atmosphere even during busy hours.
The most interesting interior detail appears on the back wall, where artwork referencing the origins of Vienna coffee and the carriage-driver concept of Einspänner is displayed. Once you understand the story behind the drink, even the logo and illustrations suddenly feel more meaningful.
There is also a self-service water station conveniently placed in one corner, which feels especially thoughtful after drinking rich cream-based coffee.
Another major highlight is the café’s reputation for handmade cakes. Along one side of the café, there are displays and ordering guides for whole cakes, making it clear that desserts are taken very seriously here.

The cream layer was incredibly thick and dense, which I personally loved. Usually, when drinking Einspänner, I habitually test the cream texture first with a spoon—and this one was surprisingly firm and luxurious.
Instead of instantly blending into the coffee, the cream maintained distinct layers while still flowing together naturally when drinking. Combined with the nutty espresso underneath, the balance was excellent.
My boyfriend immediately declared it the best Einspänner he had ever tried.
The Hazelnut Ice Blended also turned out surprisingly good. Served with a lightly slushy texture similar to Korean “Deowisanyang” ice cream, it was refreshing without becoming overly sweet. It instantly felt like the kind of summer menu you would crave repeatedly.
Then came the Lemon Curd Cake.
Each slice is individually packaged, which makes even whole-cake purchases feel convenient for sharing. The sponge itself was unbelievably soft—almost like a nostalgic custard cake texture from childhood.
The balance between the cream, sponge, and layers of lemon curd was especially satisfying, creating a bright sweet-and-tangy flavor combination that worked beautifully together.
The only unexpected detail was the jelly topping on top, which turned out sweeter than anticipated rather than sour, but aside from that, the cake was genuinely excellent.

Star City Mall already has almost everything you could need for a full day indoors—shopping, bookstores, movies, restaurants, and supermarkets.
The only thing I previously felt it lacked was a truly memorable café.

With its authentic old-school Viennese coffee concept, spacious interior, excellent desserts, and genuinely satisfying Einspänner, it easily became one of the most memorable café experiences around Konkuk University.
Especially during the hot summer season, it feels like the perfect indoor date-course café to revisit again and again.
