Jonggak Spicy Octopus: Enjoy smoky, spicy flame-grilled nakji and hot clam soup at Obongzip Jongno in Seoul. A top local spot for lunch, dinner, dates, and group gatherings near Jonggak Station.
There are some dishes you crave only when the mood is absolutely right.
Not just because you are hungry, but because you want something bold, smoky, and satisfying enough to completely reset your day.
For me, one of those dishes is always Jonggak Spicy flame-grilled octopus.
And if I had to recommend one place first, without hesitation, it would be Jonggak Spicy Octopus, Obongzip Jongno, one of the most reliable places for Jonggak spicy octopus in Seoul.
It is the kind of food that wakes up your appetite immediately.
The heat is definitely there, but it is not the kind of spicy that only hurts. It is flavorful, slightly sweet, smoky from the fire, and dangerously good with rice. The kind of dish that makes you keep eating even after you tell yourself you are full.
A Place I Already Trusted, Now in Jonggak
I had known Jonggak Spicy food Obongjip for a while before visiting this branch.
Whenever I wanted something filling and properly spicy, their flame-grilled octopus was already one of my favorite choices.
So when I realized there was an Obongzip Jongno branch near Jonggak, I already knew I wanted to bring someone who had never tried it before.
That was exactly how this visit happened.
I made a reservation in advance and came by in the evening for a casual date. We both love spicy food, so there was really no need to overthink the menu. A big plate of spicy octopus, hot rice, and a bubbling seafood soup on the side already sounded like the perfect combination.
And once everything arrived at the table, that feeling was confirmed immediately.
This is one of those meals that works equally well as a satisfying dinner, a drinking menu, or a stress-relief lunch when work has been too much.

Spacious Enough for Groups, Casual Enough for Dates

Jonggak Spicy Octopus, Obongzip Jongno is larger than you might expect.
The hall is set up mostly with four-person tables, which makes the layout flexible and practical. If you book ahead for a larger gathering, the tables can be arranged in a long row, making it suitable for office dinners and group meetups as well.
When I visited around 6 PM, there were already multiple group tables fully in progress. Some were clearly team dinners, others looked like casual friend meetups, and a few tables were already deep into drinks and spicy food. The energy was lively without feeling chaotic.
That is probably one of the biggest reasons this place works so well. It can be: a casual weekday dinner, a proper group meal, a company dinner, or a spicy comfort-food date spot.
The atmosphere is approachable, busy in a good way, and very easy to settle into.
Self-Serve Side Station That Actually Helps the Meal

There is also a self-serve side bar, which matters more here than it might at other restaurants.
Because the main attraction is the flame-grilled spicy octopus, the side dishes are not trying to compete with it. Instead, they are there to help you build the perfect bite.
The most useful ones are definitely:
- bean sprouts
- roasted seaweed
- rice mix-ins
These are exactly the kinds of side ingredients that turn spicy octopus into a proper rice-stealing meal. I made sure to grab extra bean sprouts and seaweed right away because if you know this dish, you already know those are essential.
The Menu at Jonggak Spicy Octopus, Obongzip Jongno: Lunch-Friendly, Dinner-Friendly, and Great for Sharing
The menu is easy to understand once you see the structure.
Orders are placed through the tablet at the table, and unlike some places, this is not prepaid, which makes sense since many people come here for drinks as well.
The categories are divided into:
- main dishes
- lunch specials
- rice and meal options
- drinking dishes
- add-ons
- drinks and alcohol
If you visit during lunch, the lunch specials are the obvious place to start. If you come for dinner, it makes more sense to look straight at the main dishes.
The most popular overall menu at Jonggak Spicy food restaurant is probably the Obong Special, which combines flame-grilled octopus, bossam, and tray buckwheat noodles. It is known as the best-value sharing set, and I can absolutely see why.
Still, for this visit, I wanted to focus entirely on the octopus itself.
I had already eaten the more mixed combination menus plenty of times before, and this time I wanted the full spicy octopus experience with soup on the side.
That turned out to be the perfect choice.
Lunch Value Is Especially Strong
One detail worth mentioning is that lunch has especially good value.
Jonggak Spicy Octopus, Obongzip Jongno’s Lunch menus are available only from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and when you visit at that time, the restaurant becomes a very strong option for nearby office workers.
Unlimited rice during lunch makes the spicy octopus even more dangerous in the best possible way. It is exactly the kind of menu that turns into a true “rice thief,” because one spoonful is never enough.
There is also an Instagram event where following the account and posting can get you extras like rice balls, fried rice, or noodles, which is another nice touch for anyone who wants to maximize value.
The Food Arrives Fast, and the Table Already Looks Good

The basic side dishes are brought out first and set on the table, which makes the whole meal feel ready to begin almost immediately.
Depending on the season, the soup side can change too. In winter, seaweed soup may be included, while in summer they serve chilled cucumber soup instead. That seasonal switch made the place feel even more thoughtful.

Not long after the basic table setting was complete, our main dishes arrived:

- the Jonggak Spicy flame-grilled octopus
- a bowl of rice already topped generously with seaweed
- and the Obong clam soup, already simmering and placed over a burner to stay hot
At that point, the whole table looked complete before we had even started.
We poured a light round of mixed beer and soju, clinked glasses, and got straight into it.

Obong Clam Soup: The Perfect Counterbalance

Before touching the octopus, I tried the clam soup first.

That was the right move.
It was spicy in a clean way, not heavy, and had exactly the kind of broth that makes you want to keep sipping between bites of stronger food. Just one spoonful and it became obvious why this pairing works so well.
The soup gives you: heat, brininess, and a comforting, drink-friendly broth.
If we had not already ordered so much, I honestly would have wanted to add noodles later and finish it almost like a seafood noodle soup. That was my only regret.
The Real Star: Flame-Grilled Spicy Octopus
Then came the main event.
The first thing that surprised me was the portion.
I had eaten their larger mixed set menus before, so I expected the octopus-only dish to feel lighter in comparison. It did not. The serving was generous enough to stand strongly on its own.
There was plenty of octopus, and just as importantly, plenty of cabbage coated in the same rich sauce. That matters, because the vegetables absorb the seasoning beautifully and become just as addictive as the octopus itself.
This dish is clearly the menu that built Jonggak Spicy Octopus, Obongzip Jongno’s reputation.
The octopus is cooked quickly over high heat in their signature sauce, which gives it: a deep smoky aroma, a glossy spicy coating, and that unmistakable fire-kissed flavor that makes stir-fried seafood so satisfying.
Cutting the large pieces into bite-size portions at the table felt almost ceremonial. Once you start eating, it becomes very clear why this is their signature.
Spicy, But in a Way That Keeps You Eating
The “basic” spice level we chose was exactly right.
It was not mild, but it was not painfully hot either.
Instead, it had that ideal Korean balance: sweet first, then spicy, with the smoky finish following after.
Even someone who is not a serious spice fanatic could probably enjoy this level. And for people who really love spicy food, it is the kind of heat that feels flavorful rather than aggressive.
That balance is what makes it so dangerous with rice.
At first, I started by just picking up pieces of octopus and eating them straight. But it took only a few bites before I had the exact same thought I always have with this dish:
This needs rice immediately.
The Best Way to Eat It at Jonggak Spicy Octopus, Obongzip Jongno
Once that thought hits, the meal changes.

Take the rice, add extra bean sprouts and seaweed from the side station, drizzle a little sesame oil, and start mixing.

There are different ways to do it. I tend to mix gradually, building each section of the bowl as I go. My partner mixes everything at once, fully committing from the beginning.
Honestly, either approach works.
Because once the smoky octopus, sweet-spicy sauce, rice, bean sprouts, and seaweed all come together, the result is incredible no matter how you mix it.
The octopus itself stays plump and pleasantly chewy, never rubbery, and the sauce coats everything in the kind of flavor that makes you keep taking “just one more” bite long after you should have stopped.
This is exactly the kind of meal that explains why the phrase “rice thief” exists in Korean food culture.
Why Jonggak Spicy Octopus, Obongzip Jongno Has Stayed Popular for So Long
One reason I trust Jonggak Spicy Octopus, Obongzip Jongno is that it is not just a place that went viral once and disappeared.
It has stayed popular because the basics are solid: the flavor is consistent, the portions are generous, the prices feel fair, and the service is good.
Yes, it has also been featured widely and mentioned by popular mukbang creators and TV programs. But restaurants do not stay packed for years just because they appeared online once. If the food did not hold up, the regular customers would disappear quickly.
That has clearly not happened here.
Places like this stay strong because the experience actually matches the reputation.
Final Thoughts about Jonggak Spicy Octopus, Obongzip Jongno
For me, Jonggak Spicy Octopus, Obongzip Jongno is one of those rare places that works in almost every situation.
It is good for: a satisfying lunch, a spicy dinner date, after-work drinks, office gatherings, and family meals on the weekend.
But more than anything, it is just a genuinely satisfying place to eat when you are craving something bold and filling.
If you are searching for Jonggak spicy octopus, this is one of the easiest recommendations I can make.
The combination of smoky flame-grilled octopus and hot clam soup is something I would recommend to anyone at least once. And once you try it, there is a very good chance it turns into one of those meals you start craving again on specific days.
Especially the stressful ones. Because some foods are just meals. And some feel like a reset button. Jonggak Spicy Octopus, Obongzip Jongno one definitely feels like the second.
