I’m a huge fan of financiers.
The only downside is that after eating several made with wheat flour and butter, I sometimes feel heavy, and my skin tends to react as well. Because of that, I’ve gradually started looking for gluten-free alternatives that still deliver the rich, buttery flavor I love.
That’s exactly how I discovered Lartista, one of the most charming cafés in Ikseondong.
Their specialty is gluten-free financiers made with Korean rice flour, and paired with a good cup of coffee or organic tea, they became one of the most memorable desserts I’ve had in Seoul.
At first glance, Ikseondong Rooftop Cafe Lartista looks like a small neighborhood café tucked into a busy street.
But with every floor you climb, it reveals another surprise.
Then you finally reach the rooftop.
Standing there, overlooking the traditional tiled rooftops of Ikseondong, I immediately realized this was one of the most underrated Ikseondong Rooftop Cafes.
Whether you’re visiting in summer to relax with a drink under the open sky or stopping by during winter to enjoy the peaceful sound of flowing water, this café offers a quiet escape from the city’s busy streets.
If you’re planning an Ikseondong date or simply searching for a hidden café with great desserts, Lartista is absolutely worth adding to your list.

Ikseondong Rooftop Cafe Lartista is conveniently located just a 3-minute walk from Jongno 3-ga Station Exit 7.
Considering how difficult parking can be around Ikseondong, its central location makes it especially convenient for visitors arriving by subway.

Interior of Ikseondong Rooftop Cafe Lartista : Three Floors of Hidden Spaces
Ikseondong Rooftop Cafe Lartista occupies three levels, including its rooftop.
The building reminds me of a compact Japanese townhouse, where every floor is thoughtfully designed to maximize a relatively small footprint.
First Floor
The ground floor is dedicated to ordering and the bakery display.
Beautiful pastries fill the showcase, although several popular items had already sold out by the time I visited later in the evening.
Fortunately, the gluten-free rice financiers I had come for were still available.
Mission accomplished.
Second Floor
A narrow staircase leads upstairs to what initially appears to be a small seating area with several round tables overlooking the street.
A self-service water station is also located here.
However, walking a little farther reveals an entirely different space.
Behind the main seating area is a semi-outdoor courtyard where the gentle sound of flowing water creates an incredibly peaceful atmosphere.
Beyond that is another indoor room that feels surprisingly spacious.
One of my favorite details was the raised traditional Korean floor seating positioned beside large windows overlooking the beautiful tiled rooftops of Ikseondong.
It perfectly blends modern café culture with traditional Korean architecture.
The second floor also includes a small private room tucked away like a personal library.
It appears to be reserved primarily for private bookings and small gatherings.
Rooftop
Then comes the biggest surprise.
The rooftop.
Although the building itself doesn’t seem especially tall, Ikseondong is filled almost entirely with low-rise traditional hanok buildings.
That means the rooftop enjoys an unexpectedly wide panoramic view across rows of beautiful Korean tiled roofs.
The front section features several intimate two-person tables perfect for couples.
The rear section feels more like a relaxed lounge, with larger seating areas, comfortable chairs, and even a canopy covering sofa-style seating for groups.
It would be equally suitable for coffee, brunch, wine, or small private gatherings.
One wall even includes a projection screen, making the rooftop suitable for private events as well.
This was easily my favorite part of the café.

Orders are placed downstairs on the first floor.
Guests choose their drinks from the menu before selecting desserts directly from the display case.
The drink selection is surprisingly diverse.
Options include:
- Espresso-based coffee
- Non-coffee beverages
- Organic teas
- Sparkling ades
- Viennese-style cream coffee
- Beer
- Sandwiches
- Cakes
- Häagen-Dazs desserts
Everything looked tempting.
However, I had already enjoyed a large dinner during my Ikseondong date, so I decided to keep things simple.
The rice financiers were absolutely non-negotiable.
After ordering, guests receive a vibrating pager that works surprisingly well throughout the entire building.
When your order is ready, simply return to the first floor to collect it.
Finished trays should also be returned downstairs afterward.
What We Ordered at Ikseondong Rooftop Cafe Lartista
Organic Blueberry Hibiscus Tea
Because light rain had just started, I decided to skip the rooftop and settled into a cozy window seat instead.
The first drink that completely won me over was the Organic Blueberry Hibiscus Tea.
Its deep ruby-red color was beautiful even before taking the first sip.
The flavor was rich, full-bodied, and wonderfully aromatic without tasting artificial.
Later I learned the tea came from a premium American organic tea brand, with several varieties that aren’t even sold in Korea.
That instantly explained why it tasted noticeably better than most café teas.
I liked it so much that instead of leaving the remaining tea behind—as I usually do—I actually asked for it to be packed to go.
That almost never happens.
Gluten-Free Rice Financiers
Then came the highlight.
Rice flour financiers.
I’ve always appreciated gluten-free desserts for being easier to digest, but they’ve often disappointed me when it comes to texture.
Naturally, I was curious how Lartista had managed to recreate one of France’s most butter-forward pastries using rice.
The result surprised me.
Compared to traditional wheat financiers, these were noticeably softer and slightly chewier, with an almost mochi-like elasticity.
Rather than relying heavily on butter, the natural flavor of each ingredient became much more noticeable.
Cream Cheese Financier
The cream cheese version was wonderfully rich without feeling heavy.
The cheese itself stood out clearly while remaining perfectly balanced with the nutty rice cake-like texture.
Fig Financier
The fig financier quickly became another favorite.
Generous pieces of chewy dried fig added natural sweetness and texture.
Instead of being overwhelmed by butter, the figs remained the star of the dessert.
Both versions felt lighter than traditional financiers while still delivering plenty of flavor.
They were different—but in the best possible way.
Final Thoughts about Ikseondong Rooftop Cafe Lartista
Ikseondong Rooftop Cafe Lartista was one of those unexpected discoveries that completely exceeded my expectations.
From the street, it appears to be nothing more than a small neighborhood café.
But each floor reveals another hidden space, culminating in one of the most peaceful rooftop cafés in Ikseondong.
The rooftop views alone make it worth visiting.
Then you add the carefully selected organic tea, beautifully made gluten-free rice financiers, and warm atmosphere, and it becomes one of the most memorable cafés in the neighborhood.
Personally, the standout items were the Organic Blueberry Hibiscus Tea and the gluten-free rice financiers.
They’re the kind of desserts I’d happily return for again and again.
