When people think of an easy and relaxing getaway in Gangwon-do, Hongcheon often comes to mind first.
It’s close enough to Seoul, surrounded by mountains, and blessed with a calm river that instantly slows your pace.
This time, we were looking for exactly that — a place where we could sit quietly, work a little, rest a lot, and simply watch the river flow.
That’s how we found Morning Terrace Pension, a Hongcheon River View Pension where every room faces the river and comes with a private terrace and individual BBQ space.
After quickly scanning reviews and browsing Instagram photos, we booked without hesitation.
Room Choice & Booking Tips
Morning Terrace Pension offers several room types:
- A detached three-bedroom house
- Two-bedroom units
- One-room studios
Since it was just the two of us, we chose a one-room studio on the second floor, knowing the river view would be better than the ground floor.
Even on Naver Maps, the Hongcheon River view is clearly visible, framed by mountains like a landscape painting.
If you’re debating — don’t. This view alone is worth the trip.

Getting Hongcheon River View Pension, Morning Terrace Pension & Nearby Facilities
After finishing meetings in Seoul, we drove straight to Hongcheon. For some reason, driving toward Gangwon-do always feels exciting — winding roads, towering mountains, and scenery that reminds you how beautiful Korea’s nature really is.
Travel time: About 1 hour 40 minutes from Seoul, surprisingly even closer than Pocheon.
For those without a car, the pension reportedly offers pickup services from:
- Vivaldi Park
- Ocean World
- Palbongsan Recreation Area
(Advance inquiry recommended at booking.)
Grocery Tip:
Instead of large-chain supermarkets, we recommend stopping by Nonghyup Hanaro Mart, about 10 minutes by car from the pension. It’s well-stocked and convenient.
There’s also a small mart and convenience store within a 5-minute walk from the pension if you forget something.
Exterior, Garden & Facilities of Hongcheon River View Pension, Morning Terrace Pension
Check-in is at 3:00 PM, but as usual, we arrived later after work.
Still, the moment we arrived, the beautifully maintained garden and spotless exterior instantly impressed us.
Hongcheon River View Pension, Morning Terrace Pension also operates Morning Terrace Café next door, making the entire property surprisingly spacious.
On a nice day, simply sitting in the garden and soaking up sunlight would be healing enough.
Parking is available for up to 12 vehicles, and there’s even an EV charging station.
At the back, there’s a dog exercise area (for café guests only), while the pension itself maintains pet-free and kid-free zones, depending on room type.
Room Interior – Second Floor Studio
After removing our shoes and heading upstairs, we entered Room 201.
A pleasant diffuser scent welcomed us even in the stairway — a small but thoughtful touch.
The room key was a charming, oversized old-style key — impossible to lose.
One standout feature:
✔ Late check-out is available (off-season) for an additional 15,000 KRW per hour, which is rare for pensions. Definitely worth remembering for future trips.
The studio layout was spacious enough for two, with windows on both sides letting in beautiful natural light and river scenery.

- Clean, well-maintained bed with a firm mattress (great for back support)
- Central heating (not individually adjustable)
- Complimentary bottled water
- Spotlessly clean bathroom with a window for ventilation

Private Terrace BBQ Experience at Hongcheon River View Pension, Morning Terrace Pension
Each room comes with a private terrace BBQ area equipped with an electric grill.
- BBQ fee with electric grill: 15,000 KRW for two / 30,000 KRW for four
- BBQ fee with real charcoal is available only on #102, #102 with 50,000 KRW.
- No time limit — just let staff know before use
- Heater provided for winter evenings
Pro tip: Keep the terrace door closed during grilling to avoid food smells indoors.
We preheated the grill for about 10 minutes and enjoyed pork belly, pork neck, mushrooms, and perfectly grilled aged kimchi — electric grill or not, it was excellent.
🍷 Note: A wine opener is provided, but wine glasses are not, so bring your own if needed.
Hongcheon River Walk & Photo Spots
One of the most memorable parts of the stay was the riverside walk.
Just across a small path from the pension, a quiet trail leads directly to the Hongcheon River. Snow-covered ground, partially frozen water, and absolute silence — winter in its purest form. We skipped stones, tested ice, and simply stood there doing nothing.
It was the kind of moment you remember long after the trip ends.
Morning was even more beautiful than evening. Waking up to the river view felt like a privilege.

We slept warmly through the night and woke up refreshed. Hot water was plentiful (almost too hot — be careful).
After tidying up and separating trash, we called the owner to complete check-out. Before leaving, we took one last walk through the garden, already planning our next visit.
