When people ask me which Korean mara brand is the easiest place to start for beginners, my answer is always the same: Mara Gongbang.
Among the countless mara restaurants that have opened across Seoul, Mara Gongbang has always been my personal favorite because the flavor is approachable without losing the signature charm of mara cuisine.
The Gwanghwamun Mara Restaurant Mara Gongbang Gwanghwamun branch is especially meaningful to me.

Back when I worked in Gwanghwamun, it was only a three-minute walk from my office. Whenever I wanted a quick solo lunch, a comforting spicy meal, or simply needed a stress-relieving lunch after a frustrating morning at work, this was the place I visited.

Over the years, I have introduced many friends and coworkers to mara cuisine here, and surprisingly, almost every one of them became a regular customer afterward.
Recently, I found myself craving mara again while visiting my old neighborhood. Since I was already nearby, I stopped in for lunch and ordered my all-time favorite dish.
As much as I love both Mara Tang and Mara Xiang Guo, if I absolutely had to choose one, I would always choose Mara Xiang Guo.

Simply walk past Dongwha Duty Free and continue about 100 meters into the side street. The restaurant occupies the second floor of a large building and is easy to spot.
One reason this location remains so popular among office workers is its spacious dining area. Even during busy lunch hours, the restaurant maintains a surprisingly fast turnover rate, making it easier to find a seat compared to many neighboring restaurants.
Opening Hours

Closed on Saturdays and Sundays
One of the biggest advantages of Gwanghwamun Mara Restaurant Mara Gongbang Gwanghwamun is that there is no break time.
Since Gwanghwamun Mara Restaurant Mara Gongbang Gwanghwamun mainly serves nearby office workers, lunchtime can get extremely busy. If you prefer a quieter dining experience, visiting around 2:30 PM is the perfect strategy. The ingredient bar is still fully stocked, but the crowds have already disappeared.

The dining room is large enough to accommodate the huge number of office workers who visit every day.

Tables are arranged comfortably for both solo diners and groups, with plenty of seating throughout the restaurant.
During my visit, the dining room was relatively quiet because most office workers had already returned to work.
Interestingly, I noticed several foreign visitors dining alone, which reminded me how globally popular mara cuisine has become.
One of my favorite things about this branch is the ingredient selection.
Compared to many other mara restaurants, the topping station always feels more generous. The vegetables are fresh, the ingredients are neatly organized, and everything is replenished frequently.

As someone who absolutely loves wide glass noodles, I immediately grabbed some cherry blossom-shaped noodles when I spotted them.

The ingredient station is organized by category, making it easy to build your perfect bowl with vegetables, mushrooms, tofu products, fish cakes, noodles, and skewers.
Menu of Gwanghwamun Mara Restaurant Mara Gongbang Gwanghwamun

Gwanghwamun Mara Restaurant Mara Gongbang Gwanghwamun offers everything you would expect from a dedicated mara restaurant.

Mara Tang, Mara Xiang Guo, and Mara Ban are the main attractions, while side dishes such as Sweet and Sour Pork and Menbosha make excellent additions.
Since I almost always prefer stir-fried mara dishes over soup-based versions, choosing Mara Xiang Guo was easy.
When selecting ingredients, it helps to remember that Mara Xiang Guo starts at 15,000 KRW. It’s tempting to overload your bowl, but trust me—it’s very easy to end up with more food than you can finish.
After choosing vegetables, mushrooms, noodles, tofu skin, and other toppings, the final step is selecting your protein and spice level.

I chose the medium spice level during this visit, but honestly, Mara Gongbang’s flavor profile is so balanced that even newcomers could comfortably enjoy it.
Food Review of Gwanghwamun Mara Restaurant Mara Gongbang Gwanghwamun

One of the biggest advantages of Mara Gongbang is how quickly the food arrives.

Even when the restaurant is busy, the kitchen moves impressively fast.

Within minutes, my Mara Xiang Guo appeared on the table, loaded with tofu skin, glass noodles, vegetables, beef, and plenty of fragrant mara sauce.

Since it had been a while since my last mara meal, I decided to order medium spice instead of my usual highest level.
The first thing I always do is remove most of the dried chili peppers. That way I can enjoy the flavor without accidentally biting into one and setting my mouth on fire.
The moment I took the first bite, I remembered exactly why I continue recommending Mara Gongbang to first-time mara eaters.
Compared to many traditional Chinese-style mara restaurants, the flavor here contains much less of the strong medicinal aroma that can sometimes overwhelm beginners.
Instead, the sauce delivers a balanced combination of savory richness, gentle numbness, and satisfying heat.
The tofu skin absorbed the sauce beautifully, the beef was tender, and the wide noodles provided the chewy texture that every good Mara Xiang Guo needs.
Even after all these years, the flavor remains just as satisfying as I remembered.

To complete the meal, I also ordered Menbosha.

Freshly fried and incredibly crispy, it paired surprisingly well with the spicy mara flavors. The bread layer was thicker than expected, but dipping it generously into sweet chili sauce made every bite enjoyable.
