For me, a great hotel or stay is where design, music, scent, architecture, and the surrounding landscape come together to create a complete experience. Perhaps that’s why I’ve always paid close attention to accommodations while traveling.
Rather than large luxury hotel chains, I’ve always preferred small boutique properties with strong design identities and thoughtful details. French-inspired boutique hotels have especially been among my favorites.
Recently, I discovered a Korean accommodation brand that perfectly aligns with that philosophy: Stay Interview.

The property sits atop a hill overlooking the East Sea.
From Seoul, the drive takes approximately three hours, making it a perfect weekend getaway destination.
The moment we arrived, all concerns from the rainy drive disappeared.
We had left Seoul under heavy rain and gloomy skies, but by the time we reached Gangneung, the clouds had cleared and the ocean stretched endlessly before us.
Sometimes the accommodation becomes the highlight of the trip itself. This was one of those occasions.

The drive to Gangneung Ocean View Pension, Stay Interview Hola is an experience in itself.
Following the coastal route toward Jeongdongjin, we found ourselves driving along dramatic seaside roads with waves crashing beside us.
Eventually, the navigation led us uphill toward a distinctive khaki-colored building perched above the ocean.
Later, I learned that the coastal road below is part of Heonhwa-ro, one of Korea’s most scenic seaside drives.
Even before check-in, the setting felt special.
The wide-open sea, endless sky, and lush greenery surrounding the property created an immediate sense of relaxation.

We booked Standard Room 102, which accommodates two guests and is ideal for couples.
The Deluxe Rooms feature loft-style layouts and can accommodate up to five guests, making them suitable for families or groups of friends.
For couples, however, the Standard Room felt absolutely perfect.
Room Review
One of the biggest advantages of Gangneung Ocean View Pension, Stay Interview Hola is that every room offers an ocean view.
Still, I was particularly impressed with our room.
From the outside, it appeared modest and compact.
The moment we opened the door, however, the panoramic sea view completely transformed the space.
It instantly became clear that the room had been designed around one thing:
The ocean.
Simply sitting on the bed and looking through the large front window felt therapeutic.

The two most important elements—the bed and the spa tub—were positioned side by side facing the ocean.

Combined with crisp white bedding that felt comparable to a quality hotel, it quickly became one of my favorite parts of the stay.
Many older pensions around Gangneung have begun showing their age.

The kitchen was fully equipped for cooking. However, guests should note that strongly scented seafood dishes such as crab are not permitted indoors.

Private BBQ Experience of Gangneung Ocean View Pension, Stay Interview Hola
One of the highlights of our stay was the private BBQ experience.
The BBQ caravans are located directly in front of the accommodations, making them easy to access while still providing privacy.
We reserved our BBQ setup for 7 PM and enjoyed it from sunset into the evening.

- KRW 10,000 for table setting and dining supplies
- KRW 20,000 for electric grill and BBQ equipment
The caravan itself felt like a cozy train cabin.
Perfectly sized for two people, it provided an intimate and comfortable setting.
Large windows on three sides allowed us to enjoy ocean views while grilling without worrying about smoke or odors.
Disposable plates, cups, sauce dishes, kitchen towels, and wet wipes were already prepared inside.
Everything was thoughtfully organized.
BBQ Dinner with an Ocean View at Gangneung Ocean View Pension, Stay Interview Hola
We kept things simple:
- 500g Korean pork belly
- Mushrooms
- Garlic
- Aged kimchi
The electric grill worked surprisingly well.
Without dealing with charcoal smoke, the entire experience felt cleaner and more relaxing.
As the sun disappeared behind the horizon, we enjoyed grilled pork, kimchi, and cold drinks while listening to the sound of the sea.
Moments like these are exactly why I love coastal travel.
Private Spa Time at Gangneung Ocean View Pension, Stay Interview Hola
After dinner, we returned to our room and prepared the spa.
At first, I worried the room might become humid since the bathtub is located beside the bed.
Thankfully, a nearby window provides excellent ventilation.
The atmosphere became even better once we lowered the projector screen and played our favorite music.
While the ocean view disappears into darkness at night, the spa creates an entirely different kind of experience.
It was the perfect way to unwind after a long day of driving, sightseeing, and dining.
Combined with the comfortable bed, it resulted in one of the best nights of sleep I’ve had during a domestic trip.

The following morning, we learned that guests receive complimentary Americanos from Cafe Interview, another property operated by the Stay Interview brand.
Although it required a short drive, we decided to visit.
That turned out to be another highlight of the trip.
The café itself offers incredible ocean views and beautiful architecture.
The space includes:

- Separate annex building
- Outdoor terrace areas
- Multiple photo zones
The outdoor section is arranged across several levels, allowing visitors to enjoy different perspectives of the ocean.
Watching the East Sea while sipping coffee was the perfect ending to our stay.
At one point, a train traveling toward Jeongdongjin passed between the mountains and the sea.
The view felt almost cinematic.
