Discovering Pyeonggaok’s Eobok Jangban
My culinary journey in Seoul embarked with the illustrious Eobok Jangban from Pyeonggaok. As one of North Korea’s culinary jewels, boasting numerous branches, it occupies a special place in the hearts of many.
A Tapestry of Flavors
Yet, my initial rendezvous with Eobok Jangban left me contemplative. It unfolded as a rich tapestry of flavors, akin to the exquisite remnants of a grand feast. From pancake-like creations to an array of diverse dishes, it presented a culinary mosaic. However, despite its impressive presentation and an abundance of ingredients, it didn’t quite harmonize with my personal palate.
The Enigmatic Pyongyang Naengmyeon
Another enigma that intrigued me was Pyongyang naengmyeon. Despite its widespread popularity, it failed to sway my taste buds, leaving my curiosity about North Korean cuisine relatively uncharted.
Serendipity at Samseong Station: Gyeongpyeongmyeonok
By a stroke of luck, I chanced upon Gyeongpyeongmyeonok near Samsung Station, a hidden gem that reshaped my perspective on Eobok Jangban and North Korean cuisine.
Gyeongpyeongmyeonok: The Culinary Oasis
Founded by a chef originally hailing from Pyeongyangmyeonok in Nonhyeon-dong, Gyeongpyeongmyeonok, despite its relatively short existence, consistently secures the prestigious Blue Ribbon Restaurant award, all thanks to its signature Eobok Jangban and the irresistibly flavorful Pyongyang naengmyeon.

Culinary Delights at Gyeongpyeongmyeonok
As you embark on your culinary voyage here, prepare to be enthralled by an array of side dishes, each a testament to the traditional Korean culinary art. Among them, the spicy pepper paste-marinated vegetables stand out. While all side dishes are refillable, be mindful that portions are served modestly.
Eobok Jangban: A Meaty Surprise
Eobok Jangban, the pride of Gyeongpyeongmyeonok, may initially seem vegetable-centric. However, it unveils itself as a delightful revelation, generously adorned with succulent meat, contrasting the humble vegetable portions.
Water after we get boiled with noodles, served in a cup instead of water, offer a taste that may be unfamiliar to some, but when poured into the Eobok Jangban, it transforms into a highly recommended dish. Accompanied by a drink, one glass turns into two, two glasses into three, and the broth keeps pouring, along with additional vegetables, and eventually, noodles. It’s an immensely satisfying experience.
Dumplings: A Culinary Marvel
And let’s not forget the dumplings! Arriving in sets of six or three on a plate, they feature the ideal dumpling skin thickness and a perfect meat-to-vegetable ratio. These dumplings alone are reason enough to pay a visit.
Final Thoughts: An Invitation to North Korean Cuisine
While many embark on a culinary journey to savor Pyongyang naengmyeon, I remain circumspect in my recommendation, as it has yet to resonate with my palate. However, for those who have ventured deep into the heart of Korea, immersing themselves in its culture, history, and cultivating an appreciation for North Korean cuisine, Gyeongpyeongmyeonok stands as an undisputed culinary haven. With its delightful Eobok Jangban and North Korean-style dumplings, it’s a place I wholeheartedly endorse. If you find yourself in proximity to COEX, seize the opportunity to experience it firsthand.
